This course is designed to assist Perioperative Care Practitioners (nurses or AHPs) working in the role of the Scrub Practitioner. It has been built with adherence to all relevant professional curricula (PCC, CODP, AfPP, EORNA). RCN accredited 45 CPD hours.

Description

Throughout the course, learners will explore the role through various chapters, combining theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience in an scrub setting. It is a flexible and fully online resource, which students can complete in their own time and combine with the optional portfolio included, or with their own local workbooks and rotation plans.

This course aims to:

  • Establish a robust academic foundation to support registered healthcare practitioners in their roles as Scrub Practitioners within the operating theatre
  • Enhance an existing professional practice syllabus by offering students a comprehensive exploration of various professional subject areas. This includes delving into the historical evolution of the role, ethical and legal considerations pertinent to scrub practice, an in-depth understanding of instrumentation, the surgical environment and preparation of the patient for surgery, ensuring patient safety, addressing issues like haemostasis and wound care, as well as handling emergencies intraoperatively.
  • Foster an appreciation for and understanding of the dynamics within healthcare teams, intricate systems, and the core principles underpinning safe professional practice within the context of contemporary perioperative care.
